Matt’s Take – Pitchers and Catchers Report, Baseball is Here! https://www.newsdemocrat.com/2025/02/12/matts-take-pitchers-and-catchers-report-baseball-is-here/ 2025-02-12T11:23:00Z

Now that the Super Bowl is officially over, we can finally declare it baseball season, although I’ve personally declared that ever since the Bengals didn’t make the playoffs. The sun is shining, warmer days are ahead, and pitchers and catchers have officially reported. “Hey Alexa, play ‘The Boys are Back in Town’ by Thin Lizzy on high volume.” I am excited to see some sessions from the pitching staff and it’s a massive relief to know we have Trevino over Maile this time around as a backup catcher.

Approaching Important Dates

- February 12 – Pitchers and Catchers first workout

- February 15 – Position players report

- February 17 – Full squad workout

- February 22 – First Spring Training Game

- March 27 – Reds Opening Day

Injuries

While the Reds are currently healthy overall, injuries from last year and the offseason will have an impact on this season. Having a relatively healthy spring is key to beginning the season on a high note. Injuries to Julian Aguiar, Tejay Antone, and Brandon Williamson are notable for now and that list will hopefully remain small, as I don’t see any of those players pitching in 2025. Antone possibly could find himself on the mound, but that would require coming back from a third Tommy John surgery.

MLB Pipeline

As we all know, smaller market teams require an influx of young talent year in and year out to remain successful and to compete with billionaire team owners. Included in the Top 100 Prospects this season on the Reds are Chase Burns, Rhett Lowder, Sal Stewart, Cam Collier, and Edwin Arroyo. I believe all of those listed have a chance to make it to the big leagues at some point this season, while we already witnessed what Lowder could do in the majors last season. Fans might just see the Wake Forest duo earlier than expected if Burns is as good as many expect him to be.

Baseball Memories

Everyone who loves the game of baseball in this area has favorite baseball memories, whether that is playing, going to see the Reds, or simply watching them on television with friends or relatives. As baseball season approaches, many of my favorite memories from the past continue to come to my mind. What are some of your favorite baseball memories? Here are a few of mine:

- Chris Reed and Michael Cheesbro took me to my first Reds game, where I recall slipping a note down to Pokey Reese in the dugout, only for him to throw the ball to a fan nearby.

- Attending Opening Day every year with my wife, Jenna. We’ve created some awesome memories and there is nothing I love more than waking her up at the crack of dawn on the last Thursday of March each year.

- Knothole baseball matchups year after year against Manchester and the battle growing up as a kid. Those were some of the best times.

- Wiffle ball games at Coach Arey’s house where a home run was anything hitting the gutter on the house or above, or the tree out in right field. Being a “town kid” resulted in memories that I will cherish forever roaming from Hopping Avenue and Vine Street to High Street in Peebles.

Matt’s Take – The Cincinnati Reds will Win the NL Central this Season https://www.newsdemocrat.com/2025/02/05/matts-take-the-cincinnati-reds-will-win-the-nl-central-this-season/ 2025-02-05T11:40:00Z
Pictured, from left, are Alex Diaz and Matthew McAdow.

FanDuel currently has Cincinnati at +450 to win the division this season, behind the Brewers and Cubs. With the additions of Francona, Martinez (returning), Singer, Rogers, Lux, Trevino, Hays, and Miley, I am truly in belief that this team has the ability to win the division. The return of McLain, a healthy Friedl, and the return of Encarnacion-Strand has me hopeful this time, far different from years past. If this team stays healthy, they can truly compete with the young Pirates team, the Brewers who have lost a lot of talent, and the Cubs who appear to still be adding to their roster. Time will tell and Spring Training will be a good indicator of the roles for each player, as there is competition throughout the entire roster. While a power bat is missing, I think Candelario, Elly, CES, and Hays can provide enough power to put enough runs up on the board for this roster.

Concerns with the Roster

As with any team, there are certainly concerns. A few concerns I have prior to Spring Training include:

- A true power bat is not on this roster.

- Can Lodolo stay healthy?

- If Hunter Greene gets hurt, the rotation could crumble.

- Can Andrew Abbott pitch well after the All-Star break?

- If there are outfield injuries, Cincinnati might require Will Benson, Blake Dunn, Rece Hinds, or Jacob Hurtubise to play more innings than one would like, barring any improvements.

- If Candelario struggles and Marte continues to struggle, will moving roster spots too much with Steer, CES, McLain, and Lux turn into players not getting truly comfortable rather than having defined positions?

Bullpen Preview

In today’s game, having a stellar bullpen with depth is much needed in order to provide quality innings. With eight spots to fill, I can only imagine that the bullpen will include the following:

- Graham Ashcraft (Unless he earns a starting role)

- Alexis Diaz

- Emilio Pagan

- Taylor Rogers

- Sam Moll

- Brent Suter

- Up for grabs

- Up for grabs

For the “up for grabs spots,” Tony Santillan, Carson Spiers, Connor Phillips, Zach Maxwell, Ian Gibaut, Alex Young, and Luis Mey come to mind on potential arms to bolster the pen. I am intrigued about the thought of Ashcraft pitching out of the pen and being able to throw 98-99 mph fastballs and letting loose for a couple innings. He’s a high-energy guy that I believe would be well-suited for a bullpen role.

Small Town Home Health Solutions expands services https://www.newsdemocrat.com/2025/01/28/small-town-home-health-solutions-expands-services/ 2025-01-28T12:30:00Z Wade Linville
With a crew of new staff members, Small Town Home Health Solutions has expanded its services in Brown and surrounding counties. Pictured are (in no particular order) Jamie Brierly (RN), Lisa Flannery (RN), Vicki Leonard (PTA), Carla Pennington (administrator), Jill Newton (occupational therapist), and Barb Broshears (billing). Photo by Wade Linville

The closure of Ohio Valley Manor Home Health that took place late last year left several home health care workers without jobs, but thanks to Small Town Home Health Solutions’ decision to expand services by hiring additional employees, home health care will continue for a number of local clients who received home care through Ohio Valley Manor Home Health.

Jill Newton, an occupational therapist, has worked in local home health care since the early 1990s, and she was one of the home health care workers who was concerned about her future employment and the clients she cares for. Fortunately, she was able to find employment through Small Town Home Health Solutions (STHHS) so she can continue providing service to local clients in their homes.

“I’ve been serving the residents of Brown County and Adams County since ‘92 or ‘93,” said Newton.

Newton used to work at Ohio Valley Manor back in the early 1990s in inpatient services before Ohio Valley Manor started offering home health care. Around 14 years ago, Ohio Valley Manor started offering home health care and Newton was hired on as a home care provider. She worked in home health care for Ohio Valley Manor Home Health until its closure late last year.

Ohio Valley Manor Home Health employees received notice that it would be closing in October of last year, and its official closure took place at the end of November.

Not only was she concerned about the loss of her job with Ohio Valley Manor Home Health, but she was also worried about where some of her clients were to receive home health care following its closure. So, Newton referred one of her VA clients to Small Town Home Health Solutions, and she would later join the team at Small Town Home Health.

“To be able to serve the county has been my goal, and I would like to continue doing it,” said Newton. “As we work in home health you build relationships with clients and families, and we wanted to be able to continue providing for them.”

“It was very sad for us,” Newton said of the closure.

In referring one of her clients to Small Town Home Health Solutions, Newton came into contact with Carla Pennington (RN), administrator of Small Town Home Health Solutions.

Newton explained her situation to Pennington, and it didn’t take long for her to become part of the home healthcare staff at Small Town. But she wasn’t the only former employee of Ohio Valley Manor Home Health to join the team at Small Town after losing her job. She was joined by numerous home health providers who were also hired on at Small Town.

“Luckily, we were able to find employment with Carla because she was already serving residents of Adams County and Brown County, and they also serve Clermont County,” said Newton.

Among the former Ohio Valley Manor Home Health employees to join Small Town were Lisa Flannery, a registered nurse of Ripley, and Vicki Leonard, a physical therapist assistant of Manchester. Also joining the team at Small Town was Jamie Brierly (RN), of Ripley, and Barb Boshears, of Mt. Orab, who works in billing.

“We’re all local, and we’ve been providing home health care for a long time, and we are continuing to do this through Small Town,” said Newton.

“It’s been wonderful to be able to continue the services that we already established, and we are accepting new patients as well,” said Newton.

“We have quite a few clients who did follow us (to Small Town),” she added.

Pennington has been pleased with her decision to expand services by taking on several new home healthcare workers.

“We planned on just staying small to service the community that nobody else will service in our area, and OVM’s closure helped us expand,” Pennington explained.

Small Town Home Health Solutions now provides services in the counties of Brown, Adams, Clermont, Clinton, parts of Warren, eastern Hamilton, and a small portion of Highland.

Small Town started providing home health care in September of 2022 and now consists of 33 employees.

The services provided by Small Town Home Health Solutions include: skilled nursing, skilled home health aide, physical therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.

STHHS strives to provide the communities it serves with care that provides a confident, reliable and trustworthy experience, according to Pennington.

“We came from other agencies, so our staff came together and we have 30 years of experience serving those areas (Brown and surrounding counties),” said Pennington.

“Our slogan is ‘neighbors caring for neighbors’ and that’s really important to us. We want to hire the people that live in the community to treat people in their community,” said Pennington.

Patrick Gerard Hauke, 71 https://www.newsdemocrat.com/2025/01/27/patrick-gerard-hauke-71/ 2025-01-27T03:00:00Z

Patrick Gerard Hauke, aged 71, passed away peacefully in his home in St. Helens, Oregon, on January 22, 2025, following a courageous and lengthy battle with Lewy Body Disease. Patrick will be remembered as a kind and gentle soul who loved deeply and unconditionally, worshiping all that he held dear. Loyalty to his family and friends was his guiding principle, and he leaves behind a legacy of unwavering devotion, generosity, and love.

Patrick was born on February 9, 1953, in Maysville, Kentucky, to Stanley G. and Louella J. Germann Hauke of Ripley, Ohio, where he spent his formative years. He attended St. Michael’s Elementary School and graduated from Ripley Union Lewis High School, where he served as class president and participated in countless school and community activities. Patrick’s natural leadership skills and commitment to fostering connections endured throughout his life, as he worked tirelessly to keep his classmates united for more than five decades.

Following high school, Patrick answered the call to serve his country, joining the U.S. Air Force as a B-52 Radar Bombing/Navigation Technician. After four years of honorable service, he launched a distinguished career as a technical design engineer in California’s Silicon Valley. Later, Patrick moved to Oregon, where he worked with Intel and other prominent technology companies, earning a reputation for his brilliant mind, innovative problem-solving, and dedication to helping others.

Patrick’s greatest joy, however, was his family. He married the love of his life, Darlene T. (Harsany) Hauke, on June 9, 2000. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and shared passions. Patrick cherished his only daughter, Thea Dianne Hauke, born February 11, 1978, with whom he shared countless hours of storytelling and a love for nature, farming, and wildlife rescue. He also treasured his stepson, Bradley Daniel Niehouse, born January 12, 1980, whose life he touched with his kindness and wisdom. Patrick and his family created beautiful memories traveling, camping, collecting tractors, and hosting their cherished annual Oleo Open croquet tournament on their farm. These gatherings became a cornerstone of Patrick’s life, bringing family and friends together in celebration and joy.

Patrick was also fiercely loyal to his military comrades, whom he affectionately called his “Band of Brothers.” These lifelong friendships, forged during his service, remained strong through annual

reunions, exemplifying Patrick’s dedication to honoring the bonds of brotherhood and shared experiences.

Patrick is preceded in death by his beloved son, Kevin Patrick Hauke, who died at birth on July 22, 1983, his brother, David L. Hauke, who passed away on June 16, 1985, and both of his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene; his daughter, Thea; and his stepson, Bradley. He is also survived by his siblings: Elaine (Smith) Hauke, Michael and Marie (Valada) Hauke, Theresa (Hauke) and Terry Cooper, Mary Lou Hauke, and Stanley Andrew Hauke, as well as their families.

Additionally, Patrick’s “Band of Brothers” survives him, including Samuel Arnsdorff, Michael Orr, Joseph Nix, Victor MiddleKauff, Mark Genuario, and the late Carl Sklenicka, who recently passed.

A graveside burial service will be held during the blooming season in April at the Garden of Tranquility near his home in St. Helens, Oregon. In mid-May, a Celebration of Life event is planned in Patrick’s hometown of Ripley, Ohio. Specific dates for both events will be shared with family and friends via email and social media.

Patrick’s impact on those who knew him was profound, and his memory will continue to inspire love, loyalty, and kindness. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all whose lives he touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Patrick’s memory to organizations dedicated to wildlife rescue or Lewy Body Disease research.

Glenna Saylor nee Eldridge of Hamersville, OH passed away on January 12, 2025. Glenna is survived in death by her Husband, of 73 years, Colby Saylor Jr., her Siblings; Ernest Eldrige, Charles Eldridge, Vivian Gibson, Phyllis Garrett, and Danny Eldridge, her children; Jeffrey (Cheryl) Saylor, Sabrina DeBell, Brady (Theresa Moorehead) Saylor, and her grandchildren, Josh (Brandy) DeBell, Kyle (Myranda) Saylor, Vanessa (Chris) Cleghorn, Branden DeBell, Becky Clark, Cole (Anna) Saylor, Nikki Sexton and Katie (Dave) Coleman, also 25 great- grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Glenna was preceded in death by her siblings Linville Eldridge, Wanda Corso and Beulah Eldridge, her daughter, Ava Clark, her son-in-law Kenny DeBell, and her grandchildren, Chantal Clark Cook, Jaymie Jamison and Tyler DeBell

Glenna was born on September 5, 1936, in Pineville Kentucky to the late Manuel and Leela Eldridge. She met and married the love of her life, Colby Saylor Jr., in Kentucky and was married to him for 73 years. They were rarely ever apart from each other and best friends. To hear Colby tell it, “He robbed the cradle, and he’s happy he did”. They moved to Hamersville, Ohio where they lived and built a beautiful life together with their four children.

Colby and Glenna’s house has always been a popular hangout for friends, family, those traveling from out of town and especially to all their grandchildren. Glenna liked to keep a clean, beautiful home and she made sure it was always ready for company or to entertain. She showed her love through her cooking as well. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. Her homemade biscuits were unmatched along with her cakes. Even though she loved to cook and entertain her family, they knew better than to let her catch them in the kitchen making a mess after she had already cleaned up, especially if she had already warned them that the Kitchen was closed!

Glenna was an extremely hard worker. She worked as a cook for 25 years at Hamersville schools. She also was the co-owner of Glenna’s Greenhouse founded in 1988. She had a green thumb and grew some of the most beautiful flowers and made some of the most beautiful flower arrangements. She passed her passion for growing all things beautiful on to her kids and daughters-in-law as well.

Glenna was a devout Christian woman and was saved into the Lord’s Church in 1971. She was a devoted member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Amelia Ohio. She loved the Lord, and she absolutely loved to sit and listen to people sing about the Lord. She and Colby often held church singings at their home and would invite their family members and church family to join them.

Glenna was an amazing Wife, Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandma and Friend. She loved her family with all her heart and was happy to be around them, laugh with them, care for them, and love them like only she could. Words cannot express how deeply she will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her. We know the angels were rejoicing in heaven when she was called home. We love you Mom/Mamaw and we will miss you the rest of our lives.
