Georgetown EMS levy plans move ahead

By Wayne Gates

The Georgetown Village Council is moving ahead with the process of placing a 9.5 mill Fire and EMS levy on the November ballot. Following a presentation by Georgetown Fire Chief Joey Rockey, council voted to have Brown County Auditor Jill Hall certify the current tax valuation of the village and the dollar amount the levy would raise. Rockey told council that the estimated revenue would be $535,000 annually. The increase to a $100,000 home would be about $250 per month. Georgetown currently has a 2.4 mill fire and EMS levy, which is about 25 percent of what villages of similar populations have. That 2.4 mills would end with the passage of the 9.5 mill levy, for a total increase of 7.1 mills. The next step would be for council to vote to place the levy on the November ballot, a decision that must be reached before August 8. A full report on what Rockey told the council is in the July 5 News Democrat, on sale now. To subscribe, call 513-732-2511.
