Coming off a regular season in which the G-Men managed just five wins, the G-Men have made steady strides towards improvement to claim two wins in the post-season tourney, topping the No. 9 seed Felicity-Franklin Cardinals 77-58 in round one of the Taylor Sectional on Feb. 25 and defeating MVCA to earn a berth in the sectional championship game where they were scheduled to take on No. 1 seed Cincinnati Christian on Saturday, March 4 with hopes of advancing to district tourney play at University of Dayton Arena.
The top seeded Cincinnati Christian squad held a 19-5 overall record after topping No. 11 seed New Miami 84-28 in a dominating performance on March 1 at Taylor High School.
In Wednesday’s sectional bout between the G-Men and MVCA, Georgetown sophomore Noah Pack and junior Logan Doss led the way on offense for Georgetown, combining for 28 of the team’s 39 points.
Pack led all scorers in the contest with 16 points and led the way in rebounding with 10 boards, recording a double-double. The 6’6” Georgetown standout also rose for two blocks.
Doss shot for 12 points to go along with four assists, half of his points coming from perfect six-for-six shooting from the charity stripe.
Georgetown head coach Doug Williams and his G-Men knew coming in that MVCA was a team that preferred a slower tempo game, and it was a solid defensive effort by the G-Men that would allow MVCA only 11 points in the first half of play.
On the other hand, the G-Men struggled to execute as they had hoped on the offensive end, managing only 15 points in the first two quarters of play to hold a 15-11 lead at halftime.
The G-Men returned from halftime break to score only five points in the third period, but MVCA would also manage five points in the frame while showing a great deal of patience on offense.
Entering the fourth quarter, the G-Men were clinging tight to a 20-16 lead.
Some excellent shooting from the foul line in the final frame is what sealed the win for the G-Men. The G-Men were able to outscore MVCA 19-7 in the fourth period, nine of their fourth quarter points coming from perfect nine-for-nine shooting from the charity stripe.
Doss knocked down six free throw attempts in the fourth, while Pack connected on three from the foul line in the final frame.
Pack also drained a pair of field goals in the fourth quarter.
Georgetown junior Jonathan Strickland, senior Solomon Underwood, and Doss shot for one field goal each to contribute in the G-Men’s fourth quarter run to victory.
To start off scoring in the fourth, it was Strickland grabbing a steal and cruising down the court for an easy bucket to lift the G-Men to a 22-16 lead.
After a MVCA free throw, it was Underwood scoring on a drive to expand the Georgetown lead to 24-17.
After burying a set of free throws after being fouled on a shot attempt, Doss scored off an assist by Strickland to put the G-Men up by 11 points.
An old fashioned three-point play by Pack upped the Georgetown lead to 31-17.
Then it was Pack grabbing a steal and putting up a score on transition to widen the margin to 16 points.
The G-Men held a 7-17 overall record following the sectional semifinal win over MVCA.
