MONROE — The Georgetown Lady G-Men looked to begin another deep postseason run Saturday in Monroe, but in order to do so they had to get past a tough Gamble Montessori squad.
The Lady Gators entered the game 12-6 on the season, but a 12-0 run in the middle of the second quarter proved to be the difference in Georgetown’s 59-41 victory.
In the first quarter, the Lady G-Men held an early 6-3 lead thanks to a three-point play from senior Rachel Gibbons. Gamble battled back, however, and pulled ahead 8-6 with 3:38 left in the quarter.
The teams traded blows from there. Georgetown would jump out to a two-point lead, then the Lady Gators would answer and tie the score. the last four points of the quarter were scored at the free-throw line and Georgetown held a 15-13 lead at the end of the period.
Gamble jumped ahead thanks to two quick baskets in the second quarter as the team’s press began to cause problems for the Lady G-Men. After Kassidy Siegla tied the game with a pair of free-throws, the Lady G-Men went on their 12-0 scoring spurt to take a 27-17 lead. The teams would trade baskets for the rest of the quarter, giving Georgetown a 32-23 lead at halftime.
The Lady G-Men built on that lead in the third quarter. The team shot much better from the free-throw line and increased their lead to as high as 15 points with 3:12 left in the quarter. A basket just before the end of the period cut the team’s lead to 11 points.
In the fourth quarter, the team’s reserves got a chance to take the court, as Georgetown’s lead was insurmountable. The team would end up with an 18 point victory.
Rachel Gibbons led the team in scoring with 14 points, making her one of three Lady G-Men to finish the game in double-digits. Taylor McKinney and Kassidy Seigla each added 12 for the Lady G-Men.
With the victory, Georgetown will return to Monroe High School on Wednesday, Feb. 17 to take on 13-5 Cincinnati Country Day at 7:30 p.m.
