It’s finally here.

The Brown County Fair is set to get underway this Monday, September 28 – for some, checking in their animals a day earlier signals the start of the fair – with all the usual festivities on schedule. The annual Brown County Fair parade will take place on Monday evening, there will be two days of demolition derbies, a concert from bluegrass comedy group, The Moron Brothers, and 1990s country music stars Sawyer Brown, the Junior Fair King and Queen contest, animal shows, sales, and more.

“Everything’s pretty much set at this point,” 4-H Educator and Brown County Director of the OSU Extension office Christy Clary said. “The Junior Fair board has been working hard all year.”

For folks attending Junior Fair exhibits, there will be a pair of new species of animals to enjoy. Pigmy goats and dogs have been added this year, as well as a Small animal showmen of showmen event.

Another new addition to the fair this year is a patriotic addition to the fair. American flags have been added and flag poles, benches, and the areas around bathrooms have been repainted by students at Georgetown and Fayetteville High Schools, as well as students at Southern Hills JVS.

Last year the Junior Fair Board received $100 from U.S. Representative Brad Wenstrup for a patriotic project on the fairground for 2015,” Clary said. “They’ve worked with various people in the community to make signs and cutouts, incorporated signs and benches displayed around the barns.”

Kasey Cantor and Tristen Cahall have led the patriotic efforts, according to Clary.

They did a lot of work for it. They’re gotten new flags for the barns and a lot of what they’ve done has been donated as they’ve told people in the community,” Clary said, adding that they’re barely spent the $100 acquired from Wenstrup due to generosity from members of the Brown County community.

One major change heading into this fair is the lack of poultry exhibits. On June 2, the Ohio Department of Agriculture announced their decision to cancel poultry shows at all county and state fairs, as well as at trade shows and exhibitions as a way to combat the spread of the avian flu, which was making its way from Oregon and the West Coast through Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, and the Midwest.

Instead of showing animals, the children raising poultry animals were advised to raise the animals as usual, but make a poster board project for judges to inspect.

“For those who had poultry projects, such as chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys, they had to still meet all the requirements and had to check in at the appropriate tag-ins,” Clary said. “They’ll bring in a poster explaining what they did this summer with their bird. They still had to get birds and raise them. Their poster will have pictures, they’ll check that in on Sunday at the fair and then we’ll have a poultry poster show on Wednesday afternoon.”

Here’s the lineup, in order, of the Brown County Fair parade, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. down Mt. Orab Pike and Main Street, before heading into the fairgrounds. For more information on the Brown County Fair, see the News Democrat’s Fair insert in this week’s edition of the newspaper.
