The US Grant Homestead Association will host a tea at the Bailey House in Georgetown for the national release of a new historical novel by Joe Krom titled, “Ulysses Grant: Youth to Uniform.”

The Bailey House Bed and Breakfast is located 112 North Water St., in Georgetown.

The event will take place 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. The tea and book-signing event is free and is sponsored by the association. For reservations, call 937-378-3087.

Krom’s narrative follows Ulysses Grant’s life and adventures in the turbulent frontier that was southern Ohio, through his transformation from a backwoods youth with an eighth-grade education to West Point graduate and officer in the U.S. Army.

Many recent biographies have provided a very positive re-evaluation of Grant’s personal life, his contribution during the Civil War and his two-term presidency, but few have considered the influence of his formative years in developing the traits that made him a great leader. Krom’s new book highlights events during Grant’s early life.

Krom, a retired teacher and historian, is also the author of “Heart of a Warrior,” a historical novel about the life of Sweet Breeze, daughter of the Miami Chief, Little Turtle.

Signed copies of the book will be available for $14.
