The Brown County Genealogy Society is in the process of updating cemetery records. While gathering information on the stones in the Benton Cemetery, members found that two Veterans stones are missing. There are three soldiers buried in the cemetery, George Conover, Joseph Walker and Leonidas Wright. There is only one stone left which is barely readable. The local office of the Veterans Administration supplied flag markers for the graves. On Memorial Day, members of the society met and placed the markers and flags to honor these men who served our nation during the Civil War.

The members the Genealogy Society are working with the Township Trustees to gather cemetery records from every cemetery in the county. These will then be compared to the records at the Genealogy Library in Georgetown. The Society hopes to put all of the gathered information together in book form, while updating the Cemetery Books they already have.

Many cemeteries are being lost to time and progress and this information needs to be gathered and saved, before it is to late. There are over 200 cemeteries and private/family burial grounds in Brown County, this will not be a quick or easy undertaking. However members are determined that this history is not lost.

The Genealogy Society appreciates Green Township for sharing their records of the Mt. Orab and Greenbush cemeteries. Anyone who has information concerning any of the cemeteries in Brown County they would like to share should contact Donna Skinner at 937-444-4188.
