GEORGETOWN — On Saturday, August 22 Cincinnati healthcare provider Tri-Health is hosting a health fair, calling it Healthy Women, Health Lives, at Southern Hills Career and Technical Center in Georgetown.

The program will run from 8:00 a.m. through 2:30 p.m., and features screenings for both men and women that are of no cost to the individual, regardless of if the individual has health insurance. Organizers of the event are expecting around 400 people to attend.

Women attending the event can be screened for mammogram, blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index, glucose, and osteoporosis. Women who sign up for a mammogram screening must be 40 years or older. If they have insurance, a bill will be sent to the insurance company, but it is still free for the individual.

Men attending the event can be screened for blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index, and glucose, and there will be prostate and testicular health education.

All those attending are encouraged to fast for 10-12 hours before taking the tests, especially for those who want their cholesterol and blood glucose results to be the most accurate.

Pat Bacchus of Tri-Health said that the program has been active since 2008, but this is the first time it’s coming to Brown County.

“I’ve always wanted to come out in this direction,” Bacchus said. “We tossed it around for two or three years, and finally in November, I said to Terry (Schumacher) ‘let’s move with this’ and she started contacting the right people, and we kind of came together to say ‘is this feasible.”

After finding out that the county used to host a health fair every year, Bacchus said they wanted to stay consistent, and host a similar program of their own.

According to Dale Cahall of the Brown County Health and Wellness Foundation, there will also be a farmers market at the event and other associated entities in attendance.

Bacchus said that the purpose of this event is to educate and enable visitors of their health and how to improve it.

“(We want) people to gain an increase of knowledge, not only about their health, but ways to utilize specific steps to improve their help,” Bacchus said. “We want to help to enable them to use the information so they become partners in their health care.”

In addition to Tri-Health, the event is sponsored by Southern Hills CTC, the Brown County Health and Wellness Foundation, the Brown County Health Department, and Southwest Regional Home Care.
