As part of the national Safe Routes to School program, a sidewalk construction project in Mt. Orab is under way.

Crews from BUDS Inc. will be constructing 1,716 feet of sidewalk and six crosswalks along Boyd Road, from Longwood Boulevard to the existing walk at Main Street in the village of Mt. Orab.

This is the second part of a two-phase project to construct sidewalks in the area of the Western Brown School District’s middle and elementary schools’ campuses. During the initial project in 2013, sidewalks were constructed along Main Street, Campus Drive and Western Avenue.

Aimed at elementary and middle schools, ODOT’s Safe Routes to School program assists communities in developing and implementing projects and programs that encourage and enable children in kindergarten through eighth grade, including those with disabilities, to walk or bike to school safely.

“In order to encourage walking and bicycling to school, there needs to be safe, viable options for children, and projects such as this help our communities provide these options,” said District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson.

BUDS was awarded a contract in May for approximately $146,175, and throughout construction, there should be little to no impact to motorists.

Construction began Monday, June 29, and all work should be completed in mid-summer.
