Eastern to host track clinic

Eastern High School will hold a track and field clinic on Saturday, Aug. 8, featuring two graduates of the program who are now track and field head coaches themselves.

The clinic will take place from 2:00-8:00 p.m. at Eastern High School, and all middle school and high school athletes, and their coaches are invited to participate.

The fee is $10 for Eastern High School athletes and $25 for athletes from other schools. Coaches accompanying their athletes will have free admission. Coaches attending on their own can attend for a $25 fee.

According to a flyer for the clinic from Eastern track and field head coach Mark Day, the clinic will begin with classroom learning before moving onto the track for instruction.

Emphasis will be given to the events most requested by the athletes.

There will also be a track and field question and answer session by a college head coach to prepare the middle and high school athletes for the recruiting process in case they are interested in continuing their careers at the next level.

Athletes interested in appearing on the track must sign a liability waiver prior to the camp, which can be obtained by contacting Mark Day at 513-509-7879 or activedc@maysvilleky.net. A copy of the waiver can be found below.

Below is a short biography of the two coaches hosting the clinic.

John Wise – John is a 1993 graduate of Eastern High School and was 1992 400 meter State Champion. John is currently Assistant Director of Track and Field at Wichita State University where he has coached for the past 10 years. He is responsible of the sprint and hurdle athletes as well as assisting with the multi-event athletes and handling the program’s recruiting. He is also head of the Shocker Track Club. During his coaching career at WSU he has coached 61 individual conference champions, 15 to All-America status and other athletes that have had success in the world class ranks. Prior to WSU he coached at Kent State University after his graduation from there in 1998. During his time at Kent State he was part of the school’s record breaking 4×100 team that was MAC Champion

Kevin Lucas is a 1997 Graduate of Eastern High School. He is currently the head cross country coach and head coach of the track and field programs at University of Mt. Union. The highlight of his time there has been his men’s track team winning the 2014 national championship and Coach Lucas being named National Coach of the Year. He has won 8 OAC Coach of the Year honors and has had a total selection of 66 All-Americans at Mt. Union. Prior to Mt. Union he also coached at Heidelberg where he had 10 All-Americans including a two-time indoor long jump national champion. During his athletic career at Wilmington College he was a nine time national qualifier and at one time held the OAC indoor record in the 400 meters.
